Internet Links for Learning

The following links are a sampling of e-learning sites and resources available for students on the internet. Most of these sites contain additional links to other interesting sites. Please let us know if you experience any problems with the links listed (See note about Browsers and Plug-ins below). Let me know if you would like to contribute any new and interesting links to our growing list.

A note about Browsers and Plug-ins:

A web browser is a software application which enables a user to display and interact with text, images, videos, music, games and other information typically located on a web site within the World Wide Web. Web browsers format HTML information for display, so the appearance of a Web page may differ between browsers.

 

The most common web browsers include: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox. Of these choices, Mozilla Firefox is recommended because it has better overall performance and active security features built into the program. Firefox will automatically transfer all of the bookmarks and settings from your current browser upon installation. Firefox is a free download for Mac and PC, and can be found at: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US.

 

One of the biggest obstacles to using web-based interactives is the need to have certain plug-ins installed. Plug-ins are software programs that extend the capabilities of a web browser in a specific way – giving you the ability to play sound, and to view animation and movies. When trying to access an interactive, the web browser will usually inform you as to which plug-in is needed and where it can be obtained. The best way to avoid frustration is to make sure you have the plug-ins already installed. The following are the most common plug-ins requested on the web. These plug-ins are free and there are versions for both Mac and PC.

 

Search Engines

http://www.google.com (GOOGLE is currently the best search engine available for searching keywords on the internet. Tip: use comas to separate keywords for better search results – for example “education, interactive learning”)
